Baltic Open 2012 in Darmstadt

Day 1: Arrival, setup of the pits and scrutineering

Friday, 28. 08., was the official arrival and scrutineering day. Since our team packed the rented Sprinter the night before, it could start early Friday morning. In fact, we were one of the first teams to move into a former vehicle hall of Darmstadt's own operation. In the late afternoon we passed the scrutineering almost without any problems.

Day 2: Maintenance of the FS210b and the Opening Ceremony

On Saturday (before) noon the FS210b was extensively maintained. Among other things, the clutch was adjusted and the car was refuelled. Around 3:45 p.m., all the teams set off with their loaded transporters towards Karolinenplatz to celebrate the Opening Ceremony. 

In this context, the race cars were on site until 5:30 p.m. and were admired by passers-by as well as other team members. Then they drove in a convoy and with police protection on their own wheels through the city centre to Darmstadt's market square. Mayor Jochen Partsch welcomed the teams and officially opened the Baltic Open 2012. In the evening, there was another round-the-clock check including suspension adjustment. Day 3: Braket test, skid pad and acceleration with some pitfalls

So it went late into the berths, and early out again: Already at 9 o'clock the first brake tests began on the Real parking lot in Groß-Zimmern. After adjusting the brake balance to the local grip level, all four tires were blocked as desired. Our riders Christoph Deussen and Timo Eggers each drove two attempts in the Skid Pad: Here our best time was 5.77 seconds. In the meantime, the weather continued to widen. At the beginning of the acceleration, it poured out like a bucket for a good quarter of an hour. As a result, the water was on the line - so rain tires became inevitable. These conditions made it difficult for the teams to optimally accelerate their race cars. Turners, uncertainties in the track and spinning wheels were not uncommon, so that times were also well above the times measured in official competitions. Michael Baumeister drove all the scores and drove out a great time of 4.9 seconds in the last run. The best time of the day for all teams was 4.22 seconds.

Day 4: Auto Cross and Endurance on the kart track

On Monday, the competition continued on an outside go-kart track near Hockenheim. Carsten Westermann achieved a time of 48.76 seconds in the Auto Cross. Cold tires and problems with the gearshift unfortunately made a better time impossible. The best results in this discipline were around 42 seconds per lap. Once again we missed the goal we set ourselves, to finally drive a complete endurance with the FS210b. At the driver change after Kevin Breuer's confidently driven 7.5 kilometers, the battery slipped when the engine was restarted. Even with a jump start the car did not start any more, so we had to clear the field. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to the well-organized Baltic Open Darmstadt 2012 with a disappointing end.

Regardless of the results of the competition, it was a great pleasure that our application video made it into the announcement video of the competition during the Baltic Open 2012.
